Choosing a Colour

The joinery colour is the most visible decision on the whole job, and the hardest to change later. Our colour selection advice, learned over thousands of homes:

  1. Use the colour palette above as a guide to shortlist two or three.
  2. Ask us for an aluminium colour swatch of each, when you make your final selection.
  3. View the aluminium swatch in natural light, against the cladding and the roof, to judge the colour consistency of the finished product.
  4. Confirm your colour when ordering your windows and doors. Powder is applied in the factory and cannot be changed afterwards.

Dark colours such as Matt Black / Ebony, Ironsand, Grey Friars and Karaka dominate new homes at the moment, with the whites (Arctic White, Appliance White, Off White) and the greys (Ghost Grey, Titania) on renovations and coastal homes. A dark frame reads as slimmer and makes the glass the feature; a white frame suits weatherboard and a traditional house. If the joinery is going onto an existing house, matching the roof or the garage door colour is usually the safe choice.

Matt, Satin and Gloss

Most of the standard range is a matt finish, which hides fingerprints and shows less chalking over the years; Arctic White also comes in satin and Pure White in gloss. Pearl and metallic finishes such as Silver Pearl, Warm White Pearl and Window Bronze come from Dulux's other ranges and are available on request. The powder coat is applied over pre-treated aluminium and oven-cured, which is what gives it its weather resistance; Dulux publishes the care and product information for its powder coatings, and our own maintenance guide covers washing and refurbishment.

Anodised Finishes

In addition to powder coated joinery we also have anodised options in bronze, silver, champagne and black. Anodising is not a coating but a hardened layer of the aluminium itself, so it cannot peel or chip and keeps a metallic depth that paint cannot copy. It is the choice for a commercial shopfront or a home with an industrial or mid-century look.

Woodgrain

For entrance doors, eight woodgrain finishes give the warmth of timber on an aluminium door: Dark and Light Bean, Cedar, Cherry and Riverwood. They are shown on the entrance doors page.

Colour Questions

Do some colours cost more?

The standard colours, the Dulux Duralloy +Plus Solid Range, are all the same price. Colours from other ranges, anodised finishes and woodgrains are quoted separately.

Can I have a different colour inside and out?

Yes, on some thermally broken ranges only. Ask us which, and we will quote it for you.

Will a dark colour fade?

All surfaces slowly weather in New Zealand sun. A warranty-grade Dulux powder coat, washed every few months, keeps its colour for many years, and a dark matt finish shows change less than a gloss. The maintenance guide explains how to refresh a weathered finish.

Can you match an old colour that is no longer made?

Often there is a close current equivalent in the Dulux range. Bring us a sample from the existing joinery and we will find the nearest and provide a swatch.
